On June 22, 2018, in a split vote, the Ohio Parole Board issued its decision recommending that clemency not be granted in the case of death row prisoner Raymond Tibbetts. Now the Governor must decide whether to commute Tibbetts’ death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Parole Board convened a special hearing to hear testimony from Ross Geiger, a juror on Ray’s original trial who came forward after learning that information about Ray’s traumatic childhood was never presented to the jury. Mr. Geiger explained that he would have voted for life without parole had he been given the necessary information about Ray’s upbringing at trial. Under Ohio law, just one juror’s vote for life would have prevented Ray from receiving a death sentence. Governor Kasich has the ultimate choice on whether to grant clemency or not, so he needs to hear from you.
Please call Governor Kasich now at 614-466-3555 and ask him to restore faith in our institutions and confidence in the courts by granting clemency to Ray Tibbetts. Tell the Governor that Mr. Tibbetts’ death sentence is fundamentally unreliable and calls into question the integrity of the criminal justice system because the juror would not have voted for death if he had known the truth about Ray’s childhood.
