A bill that would abolish the death penalty in Ohio and replace it with a life sentence without parole was officially introduced Wednesday.
Capital punishment is legal in 31 states.
A Pew Research Center poll released in September 2016 showed that nationwide support for the death penalty is at its lowest point in more than four decades.
