Faith leaders, others urge Kasich to halt resumption of Ohio executions

With the resumption of executions in Ohio a week away, a coalition of clergy, former corrections officials, death row exonerees and crime victims Wednesday called on Gov. John Kasich to block the lethal injection of child killer Ronald Phillips.

Pastor Carl Ruby of Central Christian Church in Springfield, a recent convert to opposing capital punishment, said at a Statehouse press conference, “I’m here asking the governor to listen to his faith” and avoid “turning his back on Christ” by allowing Phillips’ execution. Ruby was among 200 faith leaders who sent an open letter to Kasich urging him to block the execution.
