Sign of the Times: Bill to Repeal the Death Penalty Introduced

December 3— Today at the Statehouse, Representative Nickie J. Antonio (D-13) and Representative Dan Ramos (D-52) announced that they will introduce a bill that would repeal the death penalty in Ohio.

“This is yet another sign that the death penalty is on its way out,” said Kevin Werner, executive director of Ohioans to Stop Executions (OTSE). “We’ve seen the beginning of progress with the forthcoming recommendations from the Supreme Court Joint Task Force and we’re excited to see where those recommendations go too. But today we’re really seeing a glimpse of Ohio’s future.”

Faith leaders joined the co-sponsors of the bill and members of Ohioans to Stop Executions to speak at the press conference following the announcement of the new repeal bill. OTSE continues to work with faith leaders in ongoing work to repeal the death penalty to make way for more effective criminal justice measures.
